Located between Berkeley and Walnut Creek, Lafayette is  in Contra Costa County, one of nine counties of the San Francisco Bay Area.  The City was incorporated in 1968, although settlement of the area began in 1848. Now noted for its high quality of life, Lafayette's history began 10,000 years ago as the Saclans settled there in  villages. 

In 1847, Elam Brown led a fourteen family wagon train through the Donner Pass just days before the ill-fated Donner party. When he arrived, Brown bought a 3,329 acre Mexican land grant called Rancho Acalanus, which is now Lafayette. It remained a quiet farming town until the post-World War II building boom.

The town, now more than 23,908 in population, uses a volunteer system of commissions and committees for governance. The city prides itself on only using contractors, and also for having delivered a balanced budget for more than 20 years; most recently the City received .9M in revenue and spent .7, for a positive balance of 9,000.
