Before European settlement of this area, a Potawatomi village was located on what is known as "Indian Hill." The village was named in honor of Antoine Ouilmette, a French-Canadian fur trader.

In the early 1840's German Catholic farmers from the area of Trier began settling the area naming the village. The Chicago and Milwaukee Railroad tracks were added in 1854, and by the year 1857, a man named John G. Westerfield built pickle and vinegar factories; then there were other early commercial developments.

Interestingly, Wilmette offers two famous houses built by Frank Lloyd Wright including the Frank J. Baker House and the Lewis Burleigh House, both attractions for tourists. In 2007 Wilmette was ranked as the seventh best place to raise children in the U.S. (Source: BusinessWeek).
