The name Mukilteo [mew-kil-teo] comes from an Indian term for a good camping site. The town was the settled by initially the settlement was called Point Elliott, the name given the location by the Wilkes Expedition in 1841. By the year 1900, there were only 350 people, but the next year, a light and fog signal was put in at the point in Mukilteo, and this lighthouse, was completed in 1906 and still stands today.

The town was incorporated in 1947 and this is where the Point Elliott Treaty was signed on January 22, 1855 between the chiefs of 22 Puget Sound tribes and Governor Isaac Stevens. Historically, the city took part in the development of the Puget Sound.

The city started to grow fast by 1980 with the annexation of an additional 1.2 square miles along the Mukilteo Speedway (SR 525), and the population increased to 4,130 people. By 1991, the Harbor Pointe area was annexed, which doubling the size of the city to 6.25 square miles large, and again the population increased -- to more than 10,000.

Today the city's population has reached more than 19,360 (2005), and Mukilteo Washington is one of the most affluent areas near Seattle, and it is ranked number ten in Money Magazine's top 100 small towns in America.
